Communicable Diseases Intelligence (CDI) is a quarterly publication of the Surveillance Branch, Office of Health Protection, Australian Government Department of Health and Ageing. It aims to provide information about communicable diseases in Australia to inform and assist those with responsibility for communicable disease control in a wide variety of settings.

Issues published in 2010 include four quarterly reports and a vaccine preventable diseases supplement.

Summary of issues for 2010

Issue 1 - March 2010 contains annual reports on gonococcal surveillance in the World Health Organization Western Pacific and South East Asian Regions, and influenza, plus articles on the impact of faxed health alerts on the preparedness of GPs, an evaluation of the Australian National Serosurveillance Program, pre-departure screening of refugees for malaria, outbreaks of Salmonella, and Escherichia coli, adverse events following immunisation and viraemic importations of dengue into north Queensland, as well as the regular quarterly data reports.

Issue 2 - June 2010 contains annual reports on gonococcal surveillance, and Creutztfeldt-Jakob disease, plus articles on pandemic influenza H1N1 2009 in north Queensland, Campylobacter in Victoria, who gives pertussis to infants, serogroup 6C pneumococcal disease and an outbreak of Salmonella Litchfield, as well as the regular quarterly data reports.

Issue 3 - September 2010 contains annual reports on Australia's notifiable diseases; arboviral diseases and malaria; immunisation coverage; adverse events following immunisation; poliovirus; the Australia Paediatric Surveillance Unit; and meningococcal surveillance, plus articles on syndromic surveillance systems; evaluation of a national chlamydia sentinel surveillance system; an outbreak of Salmonella Typhimurium phage type 170; trends in Australian bat lyssavirus over the last 12 years; zoonotic tuberculosis; and penicillin-resistant Neisseria meningitidis, as well as the regular quarterly data reports.

Issue 4 - December 2010 contains annual reports on trachoma surveillance in Australia, OzFoodNet and rotavirus, plus articles on hepatitis B among remote Aboriginal adolescents; nosocomial pertussis infection of infants, melioidosis in north Queensland and a case report on HIV, malaria and pneumonia in a Torres Strait Islander, as well as the regular quarterly data reports.
