Figure 5 shows the notification rate per 100,000 population for shigellosis in Australia by year of diagnosis. Notification rates declined steadily from a peak of 6.6 per 100,000 in 1997 to a low of 2.2 per 100,000 in 2003. Rates fluctuated over the next 6 years with pronounced peaks in 2005 and 2008 and then declined again to the historical low of 2.2 per 100,000 in 2011.
